Biosciences & pharma

Abel & Imray has been acting for clients in the bioscience and pharmaceuticals industries ever since the sector came into existence.

"excellent knowledge of both science issues and patent issues"

The Abel & Imray biosciences & pharma team includes a wealth of expertise in all fields of biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. Our professionals are educated across a range of relevant technical areas in biosciences and chemistry, and have particular skills in the protection and exploitation of intellectual property relating to this field. Many of the Group have post-graduate or post-doctoral experience in research and in industry. The wide range of technical backgrounds and experience of our team members enables us to handle a wide variety of subject matter, including biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, cell biology, molecular biology, genetics and genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, pharmaceuticals, protein chemistry, laboratory instrumentation, medical diagnostics, drug delivery, pharmaceutical coating technology, medical devices, medical imaging and plant and agricultural biotechnology.

Our clients in the bioscience and pharmaceutical fields include international and British companies, from large corporations to SMEs. We act for European companies seeking protection worldwide, and for non-European, especially US-based, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies seeking protection in Europe. We also carry out work in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology areas for a number of UK universities and other research institutions, as well as various spin-out companies.

We are extensively involved in prosecution work before the European Patent Office in this subject matter area, and have been involved in opposition and appeal proceedings in a number of important high-value cases. We are experienced in freedom-to-operate and due diligence investigations, working, for example, for large corporations seeking to make acquisitions and also for smaller companies seeking to attract partners. Members of the team work closely with colleagues from other disciplines where their expertise would be of benefit to a client.

Abel & Imray has extensive involvement in obtaining Supplementary Protection Certificates (SPCs), both directly through the UK IP Office and in preparing data packages for use throughout Europe.
