Ceris has a degree
in Chemistry from the University of Sheffield, and subsequently undertook three
years' post-graduate research in physical chemistry at that university, leading
to a Ph.D.. Before going to university, she spent a year in the Research
Laboratories of ICI Pharmaceuticals, working on the synthesis of novel
compounds. She joined Abel & Imray in 1984 and became a Partner in 1992.
She works in the Bath and Cardiff offices, where she has overall responsibility
for work in the chemical and biotechnology areas.
She handles cases involving a variety of chemical, pharmaceutical and
mechanical subject matter, and has particular experience in the areas of food
technology and medical devices. She is involved in opinion work relating to
issues of infringement and validity in various areas, including
freedom-to-operate investigations. She is experienced in patent prosecution
work in the UK and European Patent Offices and overseas, as well as in
post-grant work, including European Patent Office opposition and appeal
proceedings. She frequently advises on patent-related agreements. During 1990
she spent 6 months working in the patent department of a German pharmaceutical
company which is a client of the firm, and is fully fluent in German.
