James has a degree
in Natural Sciences (specialising in Physics) from Cambridge University. He
also has an MSc in Semiconductor Science and Technology from Imperial College,
London. Before joining Abel & Imray in 1991 he worked briefly in industry
on superconducting microcircuits.
James handles patent cases mainly in the electronics and software fields. His
work has involved telecommunication technologies (including digital signal
processing, channel coding and encryption, mobile phones, signal cabling connectors,
ADSL and network switches (including in relation to VOIP)), general digital
circuit techniques and analogue circuit techniques, power semiconductors,
semiconductor fabrication, micromachine sensors and displays (Texas
Instruments' deformable micromirror device), electromechanical sensors, sensor
instrumentation and control engineering and personal computers. He also handles
cases concerning optoelectronic materials and photonic devices. James has
almost 25 years' practical experience of computer systems and programming (from
1980's assembly language to C#) and so he also enjoys cases involving any kind
of software, which have ranged from instruction sets for microprocessors and
compilers to automated design, bioinformatics and photocopier human interfaces.
He has experience of litigation in the UK High Court (related to DRAMs) of
hearings at the European Patent Office (examination, opposition and appeal)
both in Munich and at the Hague, and successfully opposed the European patent
for cold fusion. He has extensive experience of examination in the EPO.
