Julia has a Masters Degree in Chemistry with Industrial Experience from the University of Edinburgh, achieving the top mark for that degree in her year. The degree included a year’s industrial placement with GlaxoSmithKline, working in their Exploratory Chemistry department on synthetic organic chemistry. She worked on several projects related to novel approaches to drug discovery, and was awarded two of the company’s R&D Bronze Awards, one for her individual input into a project, and one for her general contribution throughout the year. Her final project at Edinburgh involved the synthesis of DNA-coupled fluorescent-labelled polystyrene microspheres and the study of their cellular uptake and ability to deliver and express DNA encoding green fluorescent protein. She is an Associate Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
