Matthew has a B.Sc. in Physics from Imperial College and built novel laser systems in obtaining a Ph.D. from the University of St. Andrews. He is a Chartered Physicist and a member of various professional bodies including the IEEE and the Optical Society of America. He has an LL.M. in Intellectual Property Litigation from Nottingham Law School. He joined Abel & Imray in 1996.

He has special expertise in drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the areas of optics (especially lasers, optical fibres and metamaterials), radar, image processing, software and telecoms.  He has a particular interest in contentious matters, including litigation and opposition and appeal work at the European Patent Office.

He became a partner in 2002 and is based in the firm's Bath office.
