Matthew has a first class degree in Chemistry from Oxford University and a Ph.D. from the University of Bristol, the latter involving developing new synthetic routes to neurologically-active target compounds from carbohydrate starting materials. During his time at university he gained experience working in the laboratories of a pharmaceutical company and as a process chemist with a substantial UK biotech company. He is a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Matthew has gained invaluable experience in industry working for a substantial period on secondment to the in-house patent department of a major pharmaceutical and consumer healthcare company. His work covers a variety of chemical subject matter. He has particular expertise in the pharmaceutical area, where he is extensively involved in drafting, prosecution and freedom-to-operate work worldwide. His patent work includes small chemical entities, drug formulations, biochemistry, printing inks, polymer technology, contact lenses, food technology and packaging. He advises on patent infringement and validity, and is experienced in handling oppositions before the European Patent Office.

Matthew joined the firm in 2002 and became a Partner in 2012. He is based in the Bath office.
