Sam has a degree in
Biological Sciences and Chemistry and a M.Sc. in Biological Sciences from
Waikato University, New Zealand. He subsequently spent 18 months in the
Reproductive Technologies Group of the Crown research institute AgResearch, in
research in transgenics and molecular embryology.
He joined the patent profession in 2001, working in New Zealand, where he
advised many of New Zealand's universities and Crown research institutes in the
areas of biochemistry and biotechnology. His work has covered a wide variety of
subject-matter including diagnostic assays and screening arrays, neuronal
survival factors, biopolymers, vaccine delivery and drug dosing regimens,
anthelmintic compositions, and controlled-release medical devices. He has
extensive experience of advising on patentability and freedom-to-operate
issues, research direction and filing strategies, and the drafting and
prosecution of local and international patent applications. He has also been
involved in patent opposition and revocation proceedings.
Sam contributed three chapters for the New Zealand IP Manual for the Life
Sciences and has written several articles for industry publications. He is a
non-resident member of the New Zealand Institute of Patent Attorneys and has
been a member of the National Committee of the Licensing Executives Society of
Australia and New Zealand.
He joined Abel & Imray in 2007 and is based in the firm’s London office.
