Sue Scott has a degree in Chemistry from Oxford University.

She first joined Abel & Imray in 1975, before moving on to spend 17 years in the oil and chemical industries where she handled a wide variety of chemical patent work, particularly in the agrochemical area, and also research-based agreement work, including collaborative research agreements (for example EU and UK government-funded collaborations with other companies and with academic institutions) and licence agreements, becoming Agreements Counsel for BP Research, with full responsibility for all such agreements. From 1995 until 2002 she was head of patents at BTG plc, the leading technology transfer company, and had responsibility for the management of the in-house patent functions in London and Philadelphia, and all patent related issues within the company, including those arising out of licensing, due diligence concerned with the acquisition of IP and the acquisition and demerging of companies, and litigation. From 1997 to 2001 Sue chaired the Patents Committee of TMPDF, the principal UK lobbying body in the field of intellectual property representing the interests of UK industry. She has acted as an advisor on patent matters to the UK Government, being a member of UK government delegations on a number of occasions.

Sue re-joined Abel & Imray as a consultant in 2002 and works from the firm's London office. She has handled inventions arising from sources as diverse as major multinationals, small companies and universities, and has been involved in litigation and arbitration in a number of jurisdictions. She is experienced in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications in the EPO and worldwide, including in the pharmaceutical field, and has also been involved in opinion work in that field. She has a deep knowledge of patent strategy, portfolio management, and the exploitation of patents, particularly by licensing but also by the creation of start-up companies, and has given a number of presentations on various of these subjects.
