Tom has a degree in Mathematical Sciences and an M.Sc. in Mathematics and the Foundations of Computer Science from Oxford University. He also has a Ph.D. in Computing from Imperial College, University of London. He is a member of the British Computer Society and the IEEE Computer Society. Tom joined the firm in 2001, and became a Partner in 2009.

He handles a variety of computing, electronic and mechanical subject-matter, with particular technical expertise in the areas of software, the internet and mathematical applications such as probabilistic/statistical methods, security and encryption. He advises on European and UK practice relating to the patentability of computer-related inventions, business methods and related fields of excluded subject matter, and has experience of the requirements in other countries. He also has an interest in open source licences.

Tom has extensive experience of the patenting process before the European and UK patent offices, and has obtained patents in many other jurisdictions including the USA. He provides post-grant infringement and validity opinions, and has been involved in several freedom-to-operate searches. He also has considerable experience of registered designs, frequently filing European Community registered design applications, as well as having filed many International, UK and overseas design applications.
