patent trainees

The firm has vacancies from time to time for graduates in physics, mechanical or electrical engineering, electronics, computer science, chemistry or biosciences, or any related discipline, to train as Patent Attorneys. Candidates must in general have, or be expected to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree.

work & training

Patent work is intellectually demanding and very varied. It requires a combination of scientific/technical expertise and legal knowledge of a highly specialised branch of the law.

An aptitude for logical analysis of problems and the ability to write clear and concise English are essential attributes for success in the patent profession (we generally expect candidates to have grade A in English language GCSE or Scottish Standard grade). Over and above that, we look for candidates who have the potential to handle client personnel of widely different status, ranging from a company chairman to laboratory assistant. Managerial and administrative abilities are also definite assets.

Knowledge of German and/or French is desirable.

Considerable importance is attached to training; this is mostly provided in-house, but trainees also attend external lectures and courses including the 13-week Intellectual Property Law Certificate course run by Queen Mary, University of London (formerly Queen Mary and Westfield College). German and French conversation classes are held once a week.

Trainees will be expected to sit for the relevant examinations to qualify as Chartered Patent Attorney and as European Patent Attorney.
