trade mark trainees

There are occasional vacancies for graduates in any discipline to train as Trademark Attorneys, although a background in law or languages or business experience is preferred. One or more Science subjects and/or languages at 'A' level or Scottish Higher grade would be an asset. Candidates must in general have, or be expected to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree.

work & training

Trade mark work requires a combination of legal knowledge of a highly specialised branch of the law together with the ability to provide practical and commercially oriented advice.

An aptitude for logical analysis of problems and the ability to write clear and concise English are essential attributes for success in the trade mark profession (we generally expect candidates to have grade A in English language GCSE or Scottish Standard grade). Over and above that, we look for candidates who have the potential to handle client personnel of widely different status, ranging from a company chairman to a layperson. Managerial and administrative abilities are also definite assets.

Good capability in German, French or Spanish is desirable for trade marks trainees.

Considerable importance is attached to training; this is mostly provided in-house, but trainees also attend external lectures and courses including the 13-week Intellectual Property Law Certificate course run by Queen Mary, University of London (formerly Queen Mary and Westfield College). German and French conversation classes are held once a week.

Trainees will be expected to sit for the relevant examinations to qualify as a Registered Trade Mark Attorney (leading also to the qualification of European Trade Mark Attorney).
